A girl and a garden?

Today, Jackson and I decided to plant a garden.  It helped that Aunt Vicky bought us several cold weather greens (collards, turnips, and several lettuces).  We are so blessed to have two raised beds in the back yard...we've dabbled in planting some herbs and a pepper plant, but never really any thing of this magnitude.

So here goes...

Here's where we started in Bed #1, after the weeding, of course.  Daylillies are in the back!

My first attempt...trying to keep the weeds out!

Spacing the collards

Then I realized I don't have organic topsoil or any topsoil.  I didn't think about that.  So I decided to only make one row with the cardboard.  Guess I will be weeding.  Alot.  But that's part of gardening, right?

Had to remove a left over parsley plant ~ transferred it to Bed #2 (herbs).

Bed #1 complete!
We ended up with about 18 collards, 9 Bibb lettuce, 9 Romaine, and 4 red lettuce plants in Bed #1.  We decided to plant the 9 turnip plants in Bed #2.

Turnips...that's a lime basil plant in the top right.  Smells divine!

So, did I mention I had the best helper?  He's smart, handsome, and oh so helpful!
Jackson took over the planting after I showed him how to line them up.

So there it is...We did a bit of clean up in Bed#2, too, but I didn't photograph it.  We hung a beautiful old iron gate on the storage house, moved a cone-shaped iron thingy to the middle of the bed, planted the left over parsely, and moved the rosemary...hopefully, the rosemary will do better here.

I am debating about what to do about this????

Any ideas?

Lee
